There are so many missionary miracles happening up here in Quito!
First, I was talking to my companion Hermana Sheldon this week and after a while we figured out that we were in the same Biology class at BYU for a whole semester… wow. That class was seriously 3 times per week for 16 weeks!! Heavenly Father is funny.
Lucila our new convert is learning how to read this week! She grew up way out in the fields of Ecuador, Otavalo and did not have the opportunity to go to school. Sister Pilar is teaching her to read letters and make sounds associated with them. This week she also practiced holding a pencil (something she has never done). I love watching her learn and seeing her mind stretch in a way she’s never experienced.
But here is a real miracle: We have been teaching the Navarrete family. They are a mom and her two daughters (12 and 15yrs old). They work in our area, but live a little ways away. When we first met them, the daughters were talking about ghouls and evil spirits and the mom just wanted to argue about the fact that Joseph Smith is the person who taught the Bible to Pocahontas… Basically, we weren’t so sure how well they would progress. However, this week the 15yr old started reading the Book of Mormon. They promised to come to church also and we were so excited. After sacrament meeting we went to the Sunday School class assuming that they would not make it. However about 30min into the hour, The Navarrete family walked in! They told us that they went to the bus station to come to church around 8:30am, but there was a 10k going on and the buses were shut down for the morning. So, instead of turn back to the house these 3 little women walked from the station to the church for almost 2 hours. I was appalled-In a good way. I can see their characters changing. The Book of Mormon works miracles!!
The mission is so so good!
